GEOS/GeoWorks 2.xGeoWorks is a graphical environment and application suite for DOS. GEOS for the IBM PC (PC/GEOS) was a huge advancement over the earlier-8 bit Apple II and Commodore 64 GEOS products. Although the PC versions runs on top of DOS, it is sometimes considered an Operating System. Notably, PC/GEOS was used as a graphical runtime for the America Online DOS client. The GeoWorks suites include the applications GeoWrite, GeoDraw, GeoManager, GeoPlanner, GeoDex, and GeoComm.

Folks,Usually I just hang out in the wings of this group and rarely post stuff(although I have posted one or two articles in the past). But I have hadsomething unusual happen today which I've never seen before.System: 80386 40 Mhz, 8 MB RAM, 80 MB and 320 MB hard drives installed,over 100 MB free with at least 30 MB free on drive containingGeos 2.01.

2X CD-ROM, Sound-blastercompatible sound card with speakers, and a Logitech trackball.Situation:I was creating a new file in GeoDraw and had saved my file several timesalready. My file contained lines, polylines, circles, polygons, and a lotof text. I had just finished working on the text when I changed the viewto see the entire document, and I noticed that all of my lines haddisappeared. Thinking that I must have accidently changed the color ofall the lines, I started to go through and fix this, one graphic at atime.Then, weird stuff started happening.

I had the line attributes dialog boxup, and was going through editing stuff, when all of the sudden I startedpressing items in the box but nothing happened. I tried to click on partsof the screen, to no effect. At one point, when I clicked, the topone-third of the screen changed to trash-it looked like a line gradient,but it had overwritten most of the window frames and stuff.Okay, I said, I've hosed my session. I have never done that in Ensemble,but I had been working for a long time and wasn't that surprised. Irebooted, and tried to start Ensemble again.

It brought up my background,but before it could bring up GeoManager, it put up the plain white boxindicating a KR-09 error and suggested I exit. I did, and said, 'Okay, mystate files are munged. Let's do a reset.' I rebooted and did a reset inthe geos20 directory to remove the state files.

It.still. bombed.Hmm. Maybe I really bonged things. Let's run setup again, I continued tomyself. I started to run setup, and right when it asked me to choose amouse, it put up the error-sometimes KR-05, sometimes KR-07, sometimesKR-09.I now cannot get past this point. If I need to re-install, I suppose Ican, but that's gonna be a long project.

Can anyone tell from thisdescription whether I simply need to re-install (and then update) onefile? Or do I have more serious damage? Is my mouse dead? I don't thinkso, since it works in Windows just fine.I did check for a virus running McAfee, but I'm ashamed to admit it's arather old version-2.1.4, and I haven't updated the virus files sinceI've gotten it years ago.I figure I can rebuild the file later-thankfully it isn't anything supercritical.

Run Scandisk, DiskFix, or DiskDoctor if you haveone of those. Scandisk is included with DOS 6 or newer.

DiskFixis part of PC Tools. DiskDoctor is a Norton Utility.If you don't have any of those, at least run CHKDSK.If any of those report errors, like cross-linked files orunallocated sectors, correct the errors and then tryrunning Geos again before you reinstall.It's possible that the problem is only in the FAT (FileAllocation Table - the 'index' of all the files on your harddrive). If so, GeoManager might be choking when it triesto read your drive as it starts up.
