I never considered either of the above bands to be 'blues'. Steppenwolf was pure rock and the Thunderbirds were rock-a-billy. I saw the TBirds in LA in 80 or so and they were rock-a-billy then too.First 'white boy' blues album I bought was Blues Project Live at the Cafe au Go Go in 65, which preceded Mayall/Clapton, preceded almost all the groups mentioned, no it did, except for the early Stones and may be the Animals, which everyone forgot about.I got one of the originals on now - Elmore James. Click to expand.Hmm.I never considered the Thunderbirds to be rockabilly at all. I think they were a rockin'-rollin' blues outfit. At least in the early 80s. C'mon, they were every bit as much or more of a blues band as many that have already been mentioned in this thread. The following is from AMG:With their fusion of blues, rock & roll, and R&B, the Fabulous Thunderbirds helped popularize roadhouse Texas blues with a mass audience in the '80s and, in the process, they helped kick-start a blues revival during the mid-'80s.

During their heyday in the early '80s, they were the most popular attraction on the blues bar circuit, which eventually led to a breakthrough to the pop audience in 1986 with their fifth album, Tuff Enuff.-Steppenwolf was more of a rock band than strictly a blues band, but hey, so were the Stones. They did some blues and did it very well imo. 'Hoochie Koochie Man', 'Tighten Up Your Wig', Some of side 2 from The Second.then there's some track off At Your Birthday Party that reminds me much of Howlin' Wolf.

John Kay could sound like Howlin' Wolf Jr. I thought they deserved a mention. Charlie has signed several of his over the years.

When I pulled out my Stand Back disc, he looked at the cover for a little while, smiled and said, 'That one really goes back.' I waxed poetic on it and how I played the LP constantly when it came out. He just nodded his head, looked me in the eyes and said, 'Thank you, I appreciate that.' He doesn't just blow blues, either. Still valid and touring.

His work on Columbia in 1963 and '64 was stellar – available on the Bronx Blues and Road I’m On collections. He may not have sold in the millions back then, but if that material had been released in some coherent fashion his artistry wouldn’t be such a well kept secret. That may be an odd thing to say about a guy who did sell millions of records, but Columbia really didn't know what to do with him back then; they thought they'd signed the youngest member of The Rat Pack. And I’ll second the shout towards Canned Heat. I’ve been listening to them on a regular basis the past few years. Click to expand.I've never categorized the Thunderbirds as rockabilly and here's a portion of their Wiki description:Their first two albums, released in 1979 and 1980 with Keith Ferguson on bass guitar and Mike Buck on drums, initially sold poorly, but are now regarded as successful white blues recordings. The Thunderbirds' blues style mixed Texas blues with the harmonica laced swamp blues sounds of Slim Harpo and Lazy Lester — both of whom the Thunderbirds covered. The best 'white boy blues' musician was.Jimi Hendrix.

Hendrix transcended all categories. But when he played the blues, he was playing not from the Chicago Blues or Mississippi (country) blues traditions, but from the Rock/Pop side of things combined with the R&B/STAX funk/soul side of things. It has been said that the reason why Hendrix put Red House on the first album was because all the 'heavy' English bands (like Cream) were playing blues songs - so he did that to impress those guys. Red House is a masterpiece, but I think it doesn't sound like it comes from the same place as Muddy or Robert Johnson or those guys. The best 'white boy' blues artists are the ones that take the blues as a starting point and then go somewhere original with it. The classic example is Led Zeppelin. I think the most artistically creative blues album of all time is 'Dark Side of the Moon' - which when you listen to early versions is very clearly a blues album at core. The Bloomfield stuff and the late 60's white blues guys often sound very boring and lame trying to imitate the Black sound.
